The case study of Lavrion focuses on typical problems of water resources management in the Mediterranean coastal aquifer systems. The area of extent of the coastal hydrosystem of Lavrion is app. 30km2. The groundwater system of the study area consists of an alluvial unconfined aquifer within quartenary deposits and an underlying karstic aquifer (marble formation), that are used exclusively for irrigation purposes. The extensive pumping of both aquifers has caused quantitative and qualitative deterioration and seawater encroachment towards the mainland, especially in the alluvial part of the hydrosystem. The FREEWAT platform will be used as a groundwater modeling tool in order to optimize the management of the local water resources of the karst aquifer for irrigation, combat seawater intrusion and minimize concentration of nitrates in the unconfined aquifer.
